A gutter clean removes debris, but it does not correct a gutter that falls away from its outlet or a downpipe that cannot serve the catchment above. If clean eaves gutters still overflow, the next step is a system assessment rather than automatically booking another clean. Record where the overflow occurs and what kind of rain triggers it.
Confirm what was actually cleared
A clean visible gutter does not prove its outlet, downpipe or underground connection is clear. Ask what the previous service covered and whether flow was checked. A blockage can sit below a tidy gutter line. Fine debris or a restriction beneath leaf guard may also be hidden from a ground-level view.
Use photographs taken safely from inside or ground level to show where water spills. Do not stand below loose gutters, reach from a ladder during rain or walk onto the roof to watch the flow. If overflow is entering the building or approaching electrical fittings, arrange urgent help.
Read the overflow pattern
Pooling at one end may suggest an inadequate or reversed fall, while water rising around an outlet may point to a restriction or capacity issue. A valley delivering a concentrated flow can overshoot a gutter even when the rest of the run drains. These are clues for inspection, not reliable diagnoses from a short video.
A roof drainage assessment follows water from the contributing roof area through valleys, gutters and outlets to identify the bottleneck.
Capacity is not just the gutter profile
The roof area feeding each run, local design rainfall, gutter shape, outlets and downpipe arrangement all affect performance. An extension may have added catchment without changing the original drainage. A larger gutter may still fail if it feeds the same restricted outlet or blocked downstream pipe.
- Has the roof catchment changed since the drainage was installed?
- Does the gutter have a continuous suitable fall to its outlets?
- Are outlet positions and downpipe numbers appropriate for the contributing area?
- Can water discharge safely if the primary outlet is obstructed?
- Is the stormwater connection serviceable beyond the downpipe?
Match the remedy to the finding
Re-falling a sagging run may be appropriate if brackets and supporting fascia can be made sound. A capacity problem may need changed outlets, additional downpipes or another designed improvement. A damaged underground line is a separate drainage issue. Ask the contractor to explain which component limits flow before approving wholesale replacement.
Required overflow provisions and lawful discharge arrangements depend on the building and applicable requirements. Do not drill arbitrary overflow holes or divert water onto a neighbour's property. Roof drainage and plumbing work may involve different qualified trades, so clarify responsibilities in the scope.
What a useful completion check shows
Ask for photographs and a record of the corrected falls, outlets or connections. A controlled flow check can confirm basic drainage and joint integrity, but does not reproduce every design storm. Keep notes from the next heavy rain and report the precise location of any remaining overflow rather than assuming a clean gutter has ruled out all drainage faults.
Find the drainage bottleneck
If cleaning has not solved the overflow, ask for a whole-system check before replacing a component on guesswork.
