Roof Restoration
Colorbond Roof Restoration Sydney
Refresh faded, chalking Colorbond steel and restore its colour and coating.

Colorbond is factory-coated steel with a baked-on paint finish, so it doesn't rust the way old galvanised iron does, but the coating still ages. After 15 to 25 years the surface chalks, fades and can start to break down, especially on north-facing pitches and near the coast. Colorbond restoration cleans off the chalk, addresses any isolated rust at cut edges and fixings, reseals the laps, and applies a recoat system that bonds to the existing finish.
How Colorbond ages differently to plain steel
Colorbond's strength is its factory paint and metallic coating layers, which resist corrosion far better than bare galvanised iron. But UV slowly chalks the topcoat, the colour fades, and scratches or cut edges from the original install can develop edge rust over decades. So a Colorbond restoration is mostly about surface preparation and recoating, with rust treatment limited to specific spots rather than the whole roof.
Because the surface is a hard baked enamel, the recoat only sticks if the chalk is removed and the surface is correctly prepared and primed. Skipping that step is the number-one reason a Colorbond recoat peels.
Surface prep is everything
We pressure clean to strip the chalk and grime, then check adhesion. Cut edges, scratches and any fixings showing rust are spot-treated. A bonding primer suited to pre-painted steel goes on before the topcoats, because ordinary roof paint won't grip a smooth Colorbond surface reliably. Get the prep right and the recoat lasts; get it wrong and it flakes within a year.
Colour matching and finish
Restoration lets you keep the existing colour or change it entirely, and lighter or reflective tints reduce heat gain in Sydney summers. We can tint the coating close to standard Colorbond colours, though a recoat is a membrane finish rather than the original baked enamel, so the sheen and exact shade differ slightly. We'll set that expectation before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you paint over Colorbond?
Yes, but only with proper preparation. Colorbond's baked enamel surface is smooth and chalks with age, so we pressure clean it and use a bonding primer made for pre-painted steel before topcoats. Painting straight over chalky Colorbond without prep is the main reason recoats peel.
Does Colorbond even need restoring if it doesn't rust?
Colorbond resists rust well, but the paint finish still fades and chalks with UV, and cut edges or scratches can rust over decades. Restoration refreshes the colour and reseals it before minor issues become leaks. If your roof is only lightly faded, a clean may be all it needs for now.
Will the recoated colour match the original?
We can tint the coating close to standard Colorbond shades, but a recoat is a membrane finish rather than the original factory-baked enamel, so the sheen and exact tone differ slightly. Many owners take the chance to change colour or go lighter to cut heat. We'll show you samples first.
How long before Colorbond needs restoring?
Typically 15 to 25 years, depending on the colour, the roof's aspect and how close you are to the coast. North-facing pitches and beachside homes fade faster. We can inspect and tell you whether yours is ready for a recoat or still has years left in the factory finish.
