Roof Pressure Cleaning Sydney

High-pressure washing that strips baked-on grime from sound tiles and metal.

Roof Pressure Cleaning

Pressure cleaning uses high-volume water jets to strip off the grime, moss, lichen and old flaking coating that gentler methods leave behind. On sound concrete tiles and metal roofs it's the fastest, most thorough way to get back to a clean surface, and it's essential prep before any recoat because coatings need a genuinely clean substrate to bond to. The skill is in using enough pressure to do the job without gouging tiles or forcing water under the sheets.

When high pressure is the right tool

High-pressure cleaning shines on robust concrete tiles and metal roofs with stubborn, baked-on growth and where an old coating needs stripping before a recoat. It removes lichen and moss mats that soft washing alone struggles with, and it prepares the surface so primer and coats grip properly.

It's the wrong tool for fragile or aged terracotta, cracked tiles, or roofs where water can be driven under laps and flashings. On those we dial the pressure down or switch to a soft wash. Knowing when not to use high pressure is as important as the machine itself.

Technique that avoids damage

Direction and distance matter. We work down-slope so water flows the way the roof is designed to drain, keep the nozzle at a controlled distance and angle so it doesn't lift tiles or drive water uphill under overlaps, and adjust pressure for the surface. Careless blasting can crack tiles, strip the surface off concrete, and force water into the roof cavity, so technique is everything.

Managing water, debris and access

A pressure clean shifts a large volume of water and dislodged growth, all of which heads for your gutters. We clear valleys and downpipes afterwards so drainage isn't left blocked. On Sydney's steep and multi-storey roofs we set up proper anchors and fall protection, and we manage runoff so mud and biological growth aren't flushed straight into stormwater.

What's Included

  • Suitability check to confirm high pressure won't damage your roof
  • High-volume pressure wash of tiles, ridges and metal sheeting
  • Stripping of old flaking coating ahead of a recoat where required
  • Working down-slope to protect laps, flashings and the cavity
  • Clearing of washed-down debris from gutters and downpipes
  • Fall protection and responsible runoff management

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between pressure cleaning and soft washing?

Pressure cleaning uses high-force water jets to blast off stubborn growth and old coating, ideal for sound concrete tiles and metal. Soft washing uses low pressure plus a biocide to kill growth chemically, better for fragile terracotta and coated roofs. We choose based on your roof's material and condition.

Can pressure cleaning cause leaks?

It can if done carelessly, by driving water uphill under overlaps and flashings or cracking brittle tiles. We work down-slope, control the nozzle distance and match pressure to the surface to prevent that. If your roof already has failing seals, we'll flag repairs rather than risk forcing water in.

Do I need pressure cleaning before painting my roof?

Yes, in most cases. Coatings only bond to a clean, sound surface, so stripping grime, growth and old flaking coating with a pressure wash is standard prep. On smooth surfaces like Colorbond we clean the chalk off, then use a bonding primer. Skipping the clean is why recoats peel.

Is it safe for terracotta tiles?

Old or brittle terracotta can chip or crack under full pressure, so we either reduce the pressure significantly or switch to a soft wash for those roofs. Fired terracotta is waterproof but the surface and any old coating can be delicate, so we assess each roof before choosing a method.
