Zinc Roofing & Cladding in Sydney

A premium architectural metal that develops a self-protecting patina and lasts for generations.

Zinc Roofing

Zinc is an architect's favourite for good reason. It is a soft, workable metal that develops a protective grey-blue patina as it weathers, and that patina actually heals minor scratches over time. Zinc roofs and cladding read as understated and high-end, and they last for many decades. It is a specialist material to work with, though, sensitive to what it touches and how it drains, so the detailing has to be spot on.

The self-healing patina

When zinc is first installed it has a bright, slightly reflective surface. Exposed to the air and rain it slowly forms a stable layer of zinc carbonate, the soft grey patina it is known for. That layer is not just cosmetic, it protects the metal beneath and re-forms over scratches, which is why zinc handles knocks better than painted steel.

You can buy zinc pre-weathered in grey or blue-grey tones if you want the aged look from day one, or let natural zinc develop it over the first couple of years. We talk through the look you are after before ordering.

What zinc must not touch

Zinc is chemically fussy. It corrodes if it sits in contact with copper, or if copper-laden water runs onto it, so you never put a copper roof draining onto zinc below. Its underside must also be kept ventilated and away from certain timbers and trapped moisture, which can attack it from behind.

Getting these compatibility rules right is a big part of why zinc is a specialist install. We detail the substrate, ventilation and drainage so the metal is protected front and back for its full service life.

Standing seam and panel systems

Zinc is usually installed as a standing seam or interlocking panel system, where the joints are folded up above the water line rather than screwed through the face. That gives the clean, ribbed, fastener-free look people want and keeps water out of the joints. It also allows the metal to expand and contract with temperature without buckling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does zinc change colour over time?

Zinc reacts with air and moisture to form a stable patina of zinc carbonate, shifting from bright metal to a soft grey or blue-grey. This is normal and desirable, the patina protects the metal beneath and even re-forms over scratches. You can also buy it pre-weathered.

Can zinc go near a copper roof?

Not directly. Zinc corrodes when it contacts copper or when copper-contaminated water runs onto it. So you never drain a copper roof onto zinc below, and the two metals must be kept apart in the detailing. This compatibility planning is part of any zinc install we do.

Is zinc suitable for coastal Sydney homes?

Zinc performs well in many coastal settings, but salt exposure and correct ventilation of the underside are critical. In harsh marine positions we assess the specific site and detailing carefully, because trapped salt and moisture behind the panels can shorten its life.

How long does a zinc roof last?

Properly installed and detailed, a zinc roof lasts many decades, often outliving the owners. The patina protects it and the material is very stable. The main risks are poor ventilation of the underside and contact with incompatible metals, both of which good detailing prevents.
