Emergency Ceiling Leak Repairs

A wet ceiling is frightening because a saturated plasterboard sheet can hold litres of water and collapse without warning. The visible drip is only the symptom; the leak entered the roof somewhere else and tracked to the low point. We come out fast, relieve the trapped water safely so the ceiling doesn't come down, then trace the leak back to its true source on the roof and stop it.

Why a wet ceiling is urgent

Plasterboard soaks up water and gets heavy. A ceiling that's sagging or showing a growing brown stain is holding water above it, and once it lets go it can bring the whole sheet down along with insulation and anything sitting on top. There's also an electrical risk, because water pooling above the ceiling can reach light fittings and wiring. That's why we treat a leaking ceiling as an emergency, not a wait-and-see job.

How we relieve the water safely

Rather than let a saturated ceiling collapse, we make a small controlled relief point at the lowest sag so the trapped water drains into a container in a managed way. That removes the weight and the collapse risk immediately. We isolate power to affected circuits if there's any chance water has reached fittings, and protect your floor and belongings before we start.

Tracing the leak to its real source

The drip in your ceiling is almost never directly below the roof fault. Water runs along battens and rafters before it drips, so we go into the roof space where possible, follow the wet trail uphill and inspect the roof cover, flashings, valleys and penetrations above it. Only once we've found the actual entry point can we stop it, rather than chasing the stain and leaving the real fault to keep leaking.

Frequently Asked Questions

My ceiling is bulging with water. What do I do right now?

Keep everyone out from under it, move valuables clear and place a bucket below. Don't poke it yourself unless it's about to collapse. Call us and switch off power to that area at the board if lights are nearby. We'll relieve the water safely and find the leak.

Will you fix the ceiling itself or just the roof leak?

Our emergency job is to stop the water and make the roof watertight, plus safely drain the ceiling. Replacing or repairing the damaged plaster and repainting is usually a separate trade or a follow-up; we can advise on the drying-out and what needs replacing.

Why is the wet patch not under the roof damage?

Water enters the roof at one point, then runs downhill along timber framing until it reaches a spot where it drips through. So the ceiling stain can be well away from the fault. We trace the trail back uphill in the roof space to find the true source.

Is a leaking ceiling an electrical hazard?

It can be. Water pooling above the ceiling can reach downlights, wiring and junction boxes. If lights flicker, feel warm or there's water near a fitting, isolate that circuit at the switchboard and don't touch fittings. We factor electrical safety into every ceiling-leak callout.
