Downpipe Replacement Services in Sydney

The right number of downpipes, the right diameter, connected properly to stormwater.

Downpipe Replacement

Downpipes are the part everyone ignores until water is pouring down a wall. We replace pipes that are crushed, rusted at the base, or simply too few and too small for the roof above them. Just as importantly, we connect them properly into the stormwater system so the water actually leaves the property instead of soaking into the footings.

Why old downpipes fail

Round steel downpipes rust from the inside and at ground level where they sit in damp soil or against render. Rectangular pipes get dented and split behind downpipe brackets. We also see pipes that were never big enough for the roof draining into them, so they choke and back the water up into the gutter every heavy fall.

If your existing pipe discharges onto the ground or into a broken spreader, replacement is the time to run it into a proper stormwater connection so you stop washing soil away from the foundations.

Sizing and positioning the new downpipes

We match downpipe size and quantity to the roof area feeding the gutter above. A long gutter with a single small downpipe is a recipe for overflow; adding a second outlet and pipe often solves an overflow issue on its own. We position pipes on corners and against structure where they're least obtrusive and easiest to connect below ground.

Connecting to stormwater the right way

A new downpipe that just dumps at ground level is only half a job. Where there's an existing stormwater point we connect into it with the correct fittings; where there isn't, we can discuss adding a drainage point or spreader. Getting this right protects paths, garden beds and — most importantly — the ground around your footings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many downpipes does my roof actually need?

It depends on the roof area draining into each gutter run and the pipe diameter. A common fault is one downpipe doing the work of two. We calculate the catchment and tell you honestly whether adding a downpipe will fix your overflow before we quote the job.

Can you connect my new downpipe to the existing stormwater?

If there's a serviceable stormwater point near the base, yes — we connect straight into it with proper fittings. If the underground line is blocked or missing, that's a separate drainage job, and we'll explain your options rather than connecting into a pipe that doesn't drain.

Round or rectangular downpipes — does it matter?

Functionally both work; it's mostly about looks and fit. Rectangular pipes sit flush against walls and suit modern homes, round pipes suit traditional styles and are slightly less prone to denting. We'll match whatever's already on the house unless you want a change.

My downpipe leaks at the top where it meets the gutter — is that the pipe?

Often it's the outlet or the joint at the gutter, not the pipe itself. We check the outlet connection first. If it's just the top fitting, replacing the whole downpipe may be overkill — we'll fix the actual fault rather than upselling a full replacement.
