Ceiling Leak Repairs and Water Stain Fixes

A ceiling stain is a warning light -- we find the fault behind it and switch it off.

Ceiling Leak Repairs

A brown ring on the ceiling, a sagging patch of plaster, or an actual drip in the middle of a room -- these are all signs of water that got through the roof and pooled above the plasterboard. The urgent job is to find and stop the source before the ceiling gives way. We locate the roof fault, fix it, and advise on drying and reinstating the ceiling so you are not just painting over a problem that will bleed straight back through.

Reading the ceiling to find the roof fault

The shape and position of a ceiling stain tells us a lot. A stain near an internal wall often points to a flashing or a leaking valley above; a ring in the centre of a room usually means water has travelled some distance before dropping. Bulging or dropping plaster means water is pooling and the ceiling is close to failing. We use these clues, plus a roof-cavity inspection, to trace the entry point.

Stop the source before touching the ceiling

There is no point patching plaster while the roof still lets water in -- the stain returns and any new paint blisters and peels. We repair the roof fault first, whether that is a cracked tile, a failed flashing or a blocked valley overflowing back under the tiles. Only once the source is dealt with does it make sense to address the ceiling itself.

Getting the ceiling dry and safe again

A bulging ceiling holding water can be dangerous, so we relieve trapped water safely where needed to prevent a collapse. We then advise on drying out the cavity and insulation, and on whether the plasterboard can be dried and sealed or needs replacing. Wet insulation often needs removing because it stays damp and encourages mould long after the leak has stopped.

Frequently Asked Questions

My ceiling is bulging with water -- what should I do right now?

Keep people and pets clear of the area and place a bucket underneath. A ceiling full of water can collapse without warning. Call us and we can safely relieve the trapped water and stop the source. Do not push on the bulge yourself, as it may give way suddenly.

Can you fix the ceiling as well as the roof?

Our focus is finding and fixing the roof fault so the leak stops for good. We can relieve trapped water and advise on drying and reinstatement. Full plaster and paint restoration is often handled by a plasterer, and we are happy to point you in the right direction.

Why does the water stain keep coming back after I paint it?

Because the roof is still leaking. Paint sits on the surface and water pushes straight back through, so the stain returns and the fresh paint blisters. The only lasting fix is to stop the water at the roof first, then let the cavity dry before repainting.

Does a ceiling leak mean I have mould?

Not always, but the risk rises fast the longer the cavity stays wet. Damp insulation and plaster are ideal for mould. We assess how wet things are and advise whether insulation needs removing so the space can properly dry out and stay healthy.
