Metal Roof Re-Sheeting Specialists in Sydney

New steel over a sound frame beats chasing rust one patch at a time.

Metal Roof Re-Sheeting

Metal roof re-sheeting is the fix when older galvanised or coated steel has corroded to the point that repairs no longer stack up. Sydney's coastal salt air is brutal on unprotected steel, especially around Sutherland, the Northern Beaches and the eastern suburbs. We strip the failed sheets, sort out the fixings and flashings, and lay new steel that is matched to your environment so the roof does not rust out again in a handful of years.

Why metal roofs rust out early

Steel roofs fail from the fixings and edges inward. Older galvanised iron loses its zinc coating over time, and once bare steel is exposed it corrodes fast in salt-laden air. Cut edges at gutters, ill-matched fasteners causing galvanic reaction, and ponding on low-pitch runs all speed it up. By the time you see orange staining in the gutter, the sheets are often thinner than they look.

We inspect from above and below so we can tell whether the coating has simply weathered or the base metal is genuinely perforated.

Matching the coating to your location

Not all steel is equal. For homes within a few kilometres of the surf, we specify a marine-grade coating class rather than standard, because the extra alloy in the coating buys years of life against salt. Further inland, a standard coated steel is fine and more economical. Choosing the right grade up front is the single biggest factor in how long a re-sheeted metal roof lasts.

Getting the fixings and laps right

We use fasteners compatible with the new sheet metal to avoid galvanic corrosion, seal every penetration, and lap sheets with the correct side and end overlap for your pitch. On low-pitch roofs we increase end laps and seal them so wind-driven rain cannot track back up. Flashings at chimneys, skylights and wall junctions are remade rather than reused, because old flashings are usually where the next leak starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

My roof is only rusty near the gutter. Do I need the whole thing re-sheeted?

Not always. Edge rust from cut ends can sometimes be resolved by replacing the lower sheet runs and gutters. If the rust is confined to the eaves and the upper sheets are sound, a partial re-sheet may be enough. We will show you what we find.

What is the difference between standard and marine-grade steel?

Marine-grade steel carries a heavier, tougher alloy coating designed for salt exposure. Near the coast it dramatically slows corrosion at cut edges and fasteners. Inland, the extra cost rarely pays off, so we match the grade to where you actually live.

Will a new metal roof be noisier in the rain?

Modern re-sheeting includes sarking and, if you choose, insulation blanket under the sheets. That deadens most of the drumming. A bare, un-sarked shed roof is loud, but a properly lined home roof is no noisier than what you have now.

Can you re-sheet my metal roof in a different colour?

Yes. Re-sheeting is a good chance to change colour, and lighter shades reflect more heat in Sydney summers. We will show you a current colour range and confirm any restrictions if your property is heritage-listed or under a body corporate scheme.
