Roof Replacements
Slate Roof Replacement for Sydney Heritage Homes
Traditional slate craftsmanship for Sydney's grand old homes, done with the care it deserves.

Slate is the roof of Sydney's grand Victorian and Federation homes, and it is a specialist job that has little in common with laying tile or steel. Genuine slate can last a century, but the nails, flashings and battens holding it up fail long before the stone does. When slates start slipping and lead flashings crack, a slate roof needs experienced hands, not a general roofer. We work on both natural stone slate and modern synthetic alternatives, matching the look and detailing of the original roof.
Why slate roofs fail before the slate does
The stone itself often outlasts everything around it. What fails first is nail sickness -- the original iron nails rust away until slates slide off one by one -- along with perished lead flashings, rotten battens and cracked mortar at the ridges. So a slate roof can look like it is failing when in fact many of the slates are still perfectly sound; the fixings and flashings are the problem.
That distinction changes the job. Sometimes the honest answer is re-nailing and re-flashing while salvaging good slate, and sometimes the stone is delaminating and genuinely needs replacing. We assess which it is before recommending a full replacement.
Natural slate versus synthetic alternatives
Natural stone slate is the authentic material and the right choice for a listed heritage home, but it is heavy, costly and demands skilled labour. Modern synthetic and composite slates are lighter, more consistent, and far cheaper, and from the street a good synthetic can be hard to tell apart. For heritage-controlled properties, natural slate or an approved match may be required; for a non-listed home, synthetic is often the sensible balance of look and budget.
Lead flashings and heritage detailing
Slate roofs live and die by their lead work -- the flashings around chimneys, valleys, parapets and dormers. We dress new lead by hand to the traditional detailing, so the roof looks right and stays watertight where slate meets masonry. Ridge and hip finishes are re-bedded to match the original profile. On heritage homes, keeping these details faithful is as important as the slate itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
My slates are sliding off -- does the whole roof need replacing?
Not necessarily. Slates commonly slip because the original iron nails have rusted away, a condition called nail sickness, while the slate itself is still sound. In that case re-nailing and re-flashing may save most of the stone. We assess whether it is the fixings or the slate that has failed before recommending replacement.
Is synthetic slate a decent substitute for natural slate?
For non-heritage homes, yes -- quality synthetic slate is lighter, cheaper and looks convincing from the ground. For a heritage-listed property, natural slate or an approved match is often required by council. We will advise what applies to your home and what looks right on it.
Why do slate roofers cost more than standard roofers?
Slate is a specialist craft. Handling brittle stone, dressing lead flashings by hand and matching heritage detailing takes skill and time that general roofing does not. Cheap, unskilled slate work usually leaks and damages the slate, so it is one area where paying for experience genuinely pays off.
Do I need heritage or council approval to re-roof in slate?
If your home is heritage-listed or in a conservation area, very likely yes, and there may be rules about materials and detailing. We check the controls for your address and can work to the required specification so the roof passes both the weather test and the heritage one.
