Many common large-format concrete tiles cover around 10.5 tiles per square metre, but coverage varies by profile and batten spacing, so always confirm the figure on your tile manufacturer's datasheet.

The waste allowance covers cutting at hips, valleys and edges, plus the odd breakage. Simple gable roofs waste less; complex hipped roofs with multiple valleys chew through more cut tiles.

Ordering the right number of tiles matters, but so does what goes underneath: sarking, battens, ridge bedding and pointing, and flashings all determine whether a tiled roof keeps water out for decades or fails early.
